History of the Hungarian Language

Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language with approximately 14 million speakers (largely in Europe) and an immigrant language in North America. It is mainly spoken in Hungary and also by the Hungarian minorities in the 7 neighboring countries. Strangely, this language uses affix before the prefix and is thus called typologically agglutinative.

The history of Hungarian can be traced back to some 3000 years ago when the language separated itself from the Ob-Ugric languages (a small group including the Mansi and the Khanty language).

Formerly, it was spoken by members of the nomadic tribe known as Onogouroi. The name 'Hungarian' is derived from on-ogur - the 'ten tribes', which was the name of a tribal confederation during the earlier stages of their migration.

Hungarian mythology and the historical evidence show close binding among the two communities. However, the fact that Hungarian is related to Hunnish is still debatable.

For many years post 1869, the dispute over whether Hungarian was a Finno-Ugric language or a Turkish language, continued. This controversy gave rise to the Ugric-Turkish war. The Finno-Ugrists gained victory over the language due to sufficient evidence to conclude that the languages are related.

The significant influence by the Turkic community, linguistically and genetically, was seen soon after the Hungarians had settled in the coastal region of the northeastern Black sea. Thereafter, with the fall of Attila’s empire, the Huns receded and formed their new state, which also controlled the Hungarians. Soon after, the Hungarians fell under the Turk rule from the 6th to the 8th century.

As a result, the Hungarian language shows obvious Turkic influences. It is also believed that the Hungarians took over animal propagation from the Turkic Chuvash and they were neighbors for several centuries.
