History of the Greek Language

Greek is the official language of Greece and Cyprus, which constitutes about 99% of the total population. It is officially acknowledged as the minority language in some parts of Italy, Albania, Armenia and Ukraine. It is also one of the 23 official languages of the European Union and an autonomous branch of the Indo-European family of languages. It is the first language of approximately 15 million people worldwide.

Greek is one of the oldest languages in use today. Because of its multifaceted history across 34 centuries, Greek is today recognized as one of the most important languages of the world.

Experts believe that Proto Greek was the language spoken in Greece around 2000 years B.C. It is the direct predecessor of Modern Greek and all the Greek dialects that have descended from this last common language. After a period of several hundred years, Proto Greek turned into Mycenaean Greek, the language of the Mycenaean civilization and was accepted as the first stage of the Greek language.

Formerly, the people spoke ancient or classical Greek, which had three main dialects; Ionic, Aeolic and Doric. The dialect spoken by them was determined by the tribe and the region the person belonged to. Ionic Greek had a sub-dialect known as Attic Greek which was the language of Athens. The ancient Greek literature is said to have been written in Attic Greek. The Greek language spoken today is normally seen as the fifth stage of the evolution of the language, and is still under progress! It is known as Modern Greek, since the fall of the Byzantine Empire in the 14th century. Many science and academia terms are of Greek origin. Thus, the impact of the Greek language was visible everywhere more so in schools and universities.
