History of the Nepali Language

The Nepali language belongs to the Indo-European language family. In India, it holds the official status in Sikkim and the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, apart from being the lingua franca of Nepal. The language is also widely spoken in Bhutan, parts of India and Burma, Uttaranchal and Assam.

The language is said to be rich in its cultural history and is also commonly known as Nepalese, Gorkhali, Gurkhali, etc. - the language of the Nepali Gorkhas. The language is also described as Khas Kura, which was the language of the Khasa kingdom.

Nepali originated from the group of Pahari languages and is written in Devanagari script. It is spoken in the neighboring countries like Burma and Bhutan as a mixture of Tibeto-Burman languages. The language also is a lot similar to Hindi, the official language of India, as it has been derived from Sanskrit. The written Nepali got its recognition in the 12th century A.D. which was in the Devanagari alphabet derived from the Brahmi script (11th century A.D.).

The Nepali language is the mother tongue of nearly two third of the Nepalese population and is now used by the Nepal government and as a day-to-day language. However, its usage is limited to courts. There are some Nepali speakers in Bhutan as well, who currently stay in refugee camps in eastern Nepal.

This remarkable language of Nepal has its own literary collection. The Adhyatma Ramayana was written in Nepali by Sundarananda Bara in the late 19th century, whereas the other version of it was written by Bhanubhakta. A small collection of folk stories known as Birsikka was also compiled in the Nepali language. A lot of Sanskrit words were translated, which eventually enriched the language to a great extent.
