Urdu is the official language of Pakistan as well as Jammu and Kashmir in India. It came into existence in Central Asia around the 1600’s. The word ‘Urdu’ is derived from the Turkish word ‘ordu’ which means ‘army’ or ‘camp’. The Muslim soldiers and people in Eastern Persia used it as an integrated communication tool during their subjugation of Ancient India.
Majority of the soldiers that came from Persia, Arab and Turkey, were from a Persian origin. Thus, the language used among them was directly affected. At that time, Farsi language was most prevalent but was later changed to Urdu to accommodate other races, despite the fact that Urdu contained 70% Farsi and 30% of an Arabic and Turkish mix.
The grammatical structure of the language does have some elements of Farsi and Arabic but some of the unique elements make it different from all three other languages.
The Central and South Asian Muslim’s vernacular was Persian during the period between 1000 CE and 1700 CE. It was the language under the dictate of the government, literature and the education community. However, post 1700’s, Urdu’s gradual influence replaced Persian completely and emerged as one of the powerful languages. By introducing additional grammatical structures, it differentiated itself with a greater Arabic influence.
Urdu language was finally able to discover its recognition and reach its pinnacle of success under the Mughal rule whose kings were great lovers of art and literature. Amir Khusro, one of the most distinguished poets, was the first to make use of Urdu in his poetry. He is also known as the father of Urdu language.
Unfortunately, the Urdu language began to lose its identity in the late 1800’s. During this time, the Muslims lost power to the British after their reign for more than 1200 years, which lead to the spread of English. Thus, a mix of Urdu and Hindi gave birth to a language called Hindustani. Hindustani was chosen as the language for the common man to communicate.
